On the 5th May, the last match of the season Chesterfield put up a much better fight in the away game at Villa Park. Villa eventually won 1-0 to clinch promotion back to the Second Division in front of a crowd of 45,567, which may well be a Third Division record.

Birmingham clinched promotion to the First Division a few days later by winning their final match away at Leyton Orient by 1-0.

DERBYSHIRE SENIOR CUP FINAL (SECOND LEG) AT CAUSEWAY LANE, MATLOCK
MATLOCK TOWN 2 (Hadley, McArthur) BUXTON 1 (Sleight pen.)
BUXTON WON 5-2 on aggregate score, having won the first leg 4-0.
There was no automatic promotion to the Football League at this stage and no official relegation.
However Chorley and Kirkby Town both decided to leave the league and were replaced in the following season by Barrow, relegated from League Division Four, and Mossley, promoted from the Cheshire County League.
