1974-75 - The Big Match - Matlock Town v Scarborough

Pre-match comment about the F.A. Trophy final of 1975 was very much in favour of Scarborough, who were regarded as overwhelming favourites to win against the upstarts from Matlock. This only led to motivate the 'Gladiators' to greater heights. They had got to Wembley the hard way, winning two replays as well as coming back from the dead after the first leg of the semi-final. Led by Peter Swan the former England international they had created a splendid team spirit, greatly helped by the presence of the three Fenoughty brothers in the side.

Matlock's success had meant a huge backlog of matches for them to play during April. In fact since the second leg of the semi-final on the 29th March they had played no fewer than ten matches in a three week period - winning five, drawing two and losing only three. Notably they beat Morecambe 7-2 on the 10th of April and a week before the final beat Glossop 3-2 away in the first leg of the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final.

Two days after the Wembley final Matlock were in action again in the second leg of the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final against Glossop, which was only the start of a hectic end of season schedule which involved five games in only eight days.
