Season 1966-67 - Part one

Posted by Tony Hutton

This season proved to be the end of an era for me. Having watched football in the West Midlands since 1949 this was my final season before at last making my escape back to the North.

SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER, 1966                       Attendance 36,339

LEAGUE DIVISION TWO AT HIGHFIELD ROAD, COVENTRY

COVENTRY CITY 1 (Gould) BIRMINGHAM CITY 1 (Vowden)

Glazier; Kearns, Bruck; Hill, Curtis, Farmer;
Rees, Gibson, Gould, Machin, Clements; 12th man Burkitt.

Herriot; Martin, Green; Wylie, Foster, Beard;
Hockey, Thomson, Bridges, Vowden, Murray; 12th man Fenton.

Referee:- Mr. A. Nicholson, Manchester

This was a full-blooded local derby in front of a large crowd. The action came thick and fast and despite a goal-less first half there were thrills a plenty at both ends of the field. Bobby Gould put the home side ahead and Geoff Vowden gave the Blues (as distinct from the Sky Blues) a point with a well deserved equaliser. The fiery Trevor Hockey was sent off just three minutes before the end following a foul on Farmer when tempers came to the boil in an exciting finish.
